[African American News Alerts!] Confederate Catastrophe
I live in Clayton County, Georgia right down the street from Tara and the not so fictional Gone With the Wind museum. It is the heart of the Confederacy. A few of our state legislators are introducing a bill to make April Confederate History Month. I am trying to be open-minded and think this through. I understand that many Georgians have ancestors who fought in the Civil War (losers mostly) and that is their history but naming April, the month when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, Confederate History Month is the worst idea advanced by a Republican under the gold dome. The Confederacy didn't just lose, they got beat down. There is some honor in losing when fighting for a noble cause but their aim was to destroy the Union and preserve slavery, nothing terribly honorable in that. I don’t think anybody owes me anything but I know that somebody owned my great grandparents, deprived them of the benefits of their labor and preventing them from developing their talent!
s not to mention inhumane rape, murder, and the sick custom of separating families through sale. Can you imagine going downtown to buy a few men and women or selling a group of children? I don’t think that any slave would want their great-grandchildren to just get over it especially without so much as an apology. If this bill passes it will be an economic disaster for Georgia and we all will suffer. Could I every support such a bill? Sure, just throw in Reparations and we're good.
[African American News Alerts!] Khalid Sheik Mohammed Confesses To Over Two Doxen Terrorist Acts

I hope this article speaks for itself.

According to this Washington Post article, the Pentagon released documents yesterday detailing Khalid Sheik Mohammed's confession at a Guantanamo Bay military hearing. Mohammed claims that he orchestrated the 911 attacks and was involved in more than two dozen terrorist acts around the world. Here's a few excerpts of the thought-provoking article written by Josh White of the Washington Post:

Alleged Architect Of 9/11 Confesses To Many Attacks

....Mohammed took responsibility for the attacks on New York and Washington in an interrogation detailed in the Sept. 11 commission's report. But his appearance before the tribunal at Guantanamo Bay marked the first time since his March 2003 arrest that he was allowed to make an extended statement that was not delivered to interrogators.

His capture was followed by years of detention in secret CIA facilities, where he was held without any contact with the outside world.

Here's an interesting twist:

The tribunal president also asked whether any statements he made under interrogation were "as the result of any of the treatment." Mohammed answered: "CIA peoples. Yes. At the beginning when they transferred me . . ." The rest of the sentence is redacted from the transcript.

[African American News Alerts!] Starbucks Stifels Ethiopia

What the heck is going on with Starbucks and Ethiopia? Was reading in today's Wall Street Journal about "Ethiopia is seeking to trademark the names of its most famous coffee regions - Sidamo, Harar and Yiracheffe which appear on the packaging of Starbucks and other coffee growers. The country aims to gain more control over the distribution and promotion of its most valuable expoort, ultimately, secure a better price for farmers." Seems the growers get 75 cents a pound for their coffee and Starbucks sells the product for $13 A HALF POUND.

The article continues to say "Social advocacy groups that once heralded Starbucks's coffee-buying practices have turned against the coffee giant. Critics say the company refuses to support Etthiopia's tradfemark effort because that could open the door for other countries todo the same thing... Starbucks buys virtually all its coffee from foreign countries. It buys about 2% from Ethiopia. ... Starbucks manages $1.8 billion shares of stock but argue that "it is not the money. They say they want to help farmers earn more but don't think trade marking is the right way to go about it."

From there the article gets worse. There was a hybrid coffee bean designed by Ethiopia which according to Starbucks, "I've never tasted anythng like this" as hints of black cherry, chocolate and dark rum crossed the palate. This coeffe for designed for an excluvive line. Even with the price tag of $23 a half pound, it sold out in eight weeks. Starbucks sent a letter to the trademark office urging them to deny Ethiopia trademarks for coffee stating that Ethiopia does not have the capacity to manage the trademarks. "In July ...the U.S. trademark office refused Ethiopia's request." Ethiopia is now appealing that decision.

OK folks, the kicker " Starbucks says that the "gift" that Starbucks can bring to the coffee farmer is the guarantee of more business next year."

That it! They lost me in the first part of the article but that last sentence, sends me through the roof. After I send this to y'all, I will email Starbucks national office in Seattle.

[African American News Alerts!] Barbie bandits are criminals

The media called them "Barbie Bandits," but I'd bet that if the two women were Black and 16 like everyone thought, they would have been called teen thugs, probably would have been associated with gang activity, and the public would have yelled for them to be tried as adults.

But the Barbie Bandits are adults and white. What a difference a race makes. These two adult women conspired with an adult bank teller to rob a bank. They are garnering major media. One of the woman's mother is doing media interviews describing her daughter as a good girl who made a bad choice. Isn't that what most parents of criminals say? All criminals made bad choices. These women used glasses as a disguise and stole money from a bank. They may be dumb criminals, but they are criminals. What is so fascinating that the mother would be featured on Good Morning America? Here's the Time Magazine article

[African American News Alerts!] Cherokee Nation votes to deny citizenship to descendants of slaves

The Cherokee Nation recently voted to deny citizenship to descendants of former African slaves

Cherokee Nation votes to deny citizenship to Freedmen

Members of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma overwhelmingly voted to deny citizenship to the descendants of former African slaves on Saturday, setting the stage for a legal and political battle.

With all precincts reporting, 77 percent of voters approved an amendment to the tribal constitution. Citizenship will be restricted to descendants of people who are listed on the Dawes Roll, but only those with verifiable Cherokee, Delaware or Shawnee blood.

The amendment means the descendants of the Freedmen, former slaves who were made members of the Cherokee Nation by an 1866 treaty, won't be entitled to citizenship. Over 2,000 people will be kicked out of the tribe as a result. Indianz.com

Editorial: Ouster of Freedmen a sign of elitism, fear
Friday, March 2, 2007

"Cherokees vote Saturday in a special election that won’t end a controversy within the nation, but it could disenfranchise those whose citizenship only was recognized last year by a tribal Supreme Court decision.

We understand some Cherokees fear a loss of identity in allowing non-Indians whose ancesters were placed on the rolls long ago to be considered Cherokees. The fear of identity loss is what drives some Americans to fear immigration. That’s a ridiculous fear because America is about diversity, and diversity is not a bad thing.
The Cherokee Nation is about diversity, too, not racial purity, whether you’re talking about the last 300 years of history or the last 3,000 years. It’s about change, cultural change. Change does not deny the past. It enriches the present and future. If Cherokees vote yes in Saturday’s special election, they are voting for elitism and fear, both of which do not make a stronger people. Indianz.com

If you don't think it's racism, just check out this article by Ellen Knickmeyer of the Washington Post.

Advocates of expelling the freedmen call it a matter of safeguarding tribal resources, which include a $350 million annual budget from federal and tribal revenue, and Cherokees' share of a gambling industry that, for U.S. tribes overall, takes in $22 billion a year. The grass-roots campaign for expulsion has given heavy play to warnings that keeping freedmen in the Cherokee Nation could encourage thousands more to sign up for a slice of the tribal pie.

"Don't get taken advantage of by these people. They will suck you dry," Darren Buzzard, an advocate of expelling the freedmen, wrote last summer in a widely circulated e-mail denounced by freedmen. "Don't let black freedmen back you into a corner. PROTECT CHEROKEE CULTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN. FOR OUR DAUGHTER[S] . . . FIGHT AGAINST THE INFILTRATION."
